Happy birthday, Ange~ Will you come over for dinner tonight? We can have a little party just like we used to.  Well, not quite the same seeing as your father isn't around, but we all know the highlight is having Battler there anyway.
I want to make up for our absence, in some small way.

I'm extending an open invitation to any of Ange's friends as well.  I'll be making dinner as well as dessert and you're welcome to stay as little or long as you like.  The only condition is, please keep it a secret from Ange, I want it to be a surprise.

It does! There's no point making something that doesn't taste really good, right? The ingredients are almost the same as what you would put in a cookie, but it's fluffy like bread and has a honeydew melon flavour.

Well it's relaxing here. Back home it was a matter of catching dinner. So I mostly had to spear fish. And that's not very relaxing.

Well now that's a little different. On shore, or did you go out by boat?

By boat, usually. By ship when I was a kid. We'd cast out nets to catch more. Or we'd bring in a elephant whale late in the hunting season. That would keep the village fed during the winter months.

And she's glad too. I can tell. [and with Ange visible happiness is a very rare thing.]

It's hard to tell with her, but I can't imagine she wouldn't want us around, really. She might think so briefly when we're particularly embarrassing, but that's only a brief thought. She does seem happy, I'm glad. She hasn't told me much about how things were at home, but I can tell it was difficult for her.

It must be difficult to preserve so much meat for so long, was your village very large?

When I was a kid, there about fifty or so of us altogether.

I can't say I know the average size of a village, but that sounds like a decent number, anyway.

It was small. It only got smaller. [It wasn't a decent size at all. It was a war-battered community that nearly stopped existing altogether.]

Ah, I see, I should have realised that from saying it was that way when you were a child...

Haha, that's true, but you need to eat things like that because they're healthy! I try to make sure to make things that are healthy and also taste good - sometimes you have to sneak little bits of vegetables into tasty things.

Is your mother here?
